Ballooning in Whitehorse

Day 37 and Brad and I were just heading into town to get some groceries and do some errands.  Although I had already taken a few pictures ..... this scene got me so excited and this photo was by far....better.  I have no idea what the balloons were doing in the city..... floating about the sky.

Yukon Quest

Day 36 -- Yukon Quest
What an exciting, amazing experience it was to witness the start of this incredible race.

(Copied from the website www.yukonquest.com )

At the “top of the world”, in the Yukon and Alaska wilderness of northwestern North America, an epic winter sports event takes place every February, the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race. Covering 1,000 miles between Whitehorse, Yukon and Fairbanks, Alaska during the depths of the Arctic winter, the Yukon Quest is known for excellence in canine care and fostering the traditions of northern travel by dog sled.

The Yukon Quest has been run every year since 1984 over the 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of rough, sometimes hazardous terrain between Whitehorse, Yukon and Fairbanks, Alaska. The Yukon Quest Race Start alternates annually between these two host cities.

This incredible winter sports event takes place every February when weather conditions can be the coldest and sometimes the most unpredictable of the year. The Yukon Quest race starts on schedule regardless of weather and lasts from 10 to 16 days until the final dog team arrives at the Finish Line, depending on weather and trail conditions.

A maximum of 50 mushers and their sled dog teams are allowed, and the purse is shared between the first 15 finishing teams, with all teams completing the race receiving $1,000 in recognition of the 1,000 mile trail. The Yukon Quest Champion will take home $35,000.

 Getting ready for the race.

Hockey Day in Canada

Hockey Day in Canada

FEBRUARY 12, 2011
WHITEHORSE, YUKON

Exciting times. Brad and I will be volunteering for Hockey Day in Canada events which are taking place in the north this year.  I will be working as a "gopher' for CBC North and also a ticket taker for the Alumni game between some local oldtimers and Ottawa Senators Alumni.  Brad is going to do some driving around of the VIP's for the events around the city.  Scotia Bank is sponsoring this event and they have a big banner around 3 sides of the building.  I took some photos of the banners.

As you can see the entrance to the bank is actually a hockey  net.

Magpies

These are beautiful birds.  Magpies.
They have dark navy blue feathers on their wings
and that can been seen better in the second photo.
I did not have much time to play with my camera so the photos are a bit dark.
I found out afterwards,
they were picking at a piece of dog poop that had chunks of food still in it.
EWWWW!!!!!

The Tin Man

Day 32 and I almost cannot believe it. I have made it through my first month of taking pictures.  This having a job thing really gets in the way sometimes.  Now that it is getting lighter out in the morning and evening it is a bit easier to showcase the city of Whitehorse, which is really all I've got during the week.  This next photo is of a Tin Man who stands along the road out in front of Griffiths Heating and Sheet Metal.  Poor guy....the woodstove beside him is never lit.  It is safe to say....he froze a long time ago.

Break time!!!!!!

Day 31...the pictures speak for themselves.
