Hike to the Glacier

The Mendenhall Glacier

We are almost there.

It was so blue.

Looking back.
It does not look very far...but it took us about an hour to reach the glacier,
snowshoeing in 1 1/2 feet of snow.

Before, During and After

Brad was determined to skate in Alaska so he borrowed a shovel
and started making his own ice rink on one of the
Twin Lakes in Juneau, Alaska.

This is the before......

He is still shovelling.........

and now it is complete.

He skated for about 2 hours on a very small patch of ice,
but had a great time.
I skated for a bit but it was not really big enough for the 2 of us.

Passing time

It was a very long ride on the ferry from Skagway to Juneau, Alaska.
It was a great opportunity to work with the camera, work with the white,
yellow and red lighting, and play with angles.

White

White....as far as the eye can see.

My new hat

I needed to get out of the office one afternoon so I went out for a walk.  I had to bundle up because it was about -34 C out.  I got about 4 blocks away and decided to get warm by browsing around Coast Mountain Sports.  To pass the time I started to look at some of the hundreds of hats on display.  Yes , I made the dreaded mistake of trying some on for fun.  I did walk out without buying this particular hat, but it fell in love with me and infiltrated my thoughts for the rest of the day.  The price was preventing me from feeling the love.  To not make this short story any longer, the next day Brad took me to buy the hat.  Hats up here are a necessity and an accessory....and this one is a bit of both.

Boy Toy

Not your typical boy toy.

Some times in life it is the small things
that let us know the impact we have on others.
This little truck, has a special place in the TV stand.
Reminding Brad how special he was to his co-workers.

UFO

If you look very closely
there is a UFO to the left of the moon.

Sun Dog

Day 47.........Sun dogs typically appear when the sun is low to the horizon, usually just prior to sunset or after sunrise, or during winter months.  This morning it was -33 and the sun was still low in the sky.  The light from the sun was reflecting off the ice crystals that were floating in the atmosphere.  Sun Dogs look like vertical arched rainbows or sun spots that are equidistance (22 degrees) to the right and left of the sun, and at the same elevation as the sun.   It is quite phenomenal what they look like.

Here is a picture of the sun and half a Sun Dog.

Yukon Landscape

I had a very long day driving to Carmacks and back but on the way home
the sun was setting and highlighting the landscape.

I took these out the front windshield of the car
(which is why you can see a blurred window chip in the corner of the pictures).

It was about -25 degrees
and I was not about to get out of the warm car.

A day of rest

This snow sculpture was finally finished and being displayed
outside the Canada Games Centre.

Today....Brad and I took it easy.
After lots of volunteering and taking in the festivities......
we just wanted to spend the day hanging out, and we did just that.

Another Hockey Day in Canada

Brad and I had another busy day celebrating Hockey Day in Canada.
We started out by heading to the McBride Musuem to check out the
Yukon Hockey Exhibit.

We then went to the Tahkini Arena to volunteer at the
Western Hockey League game between
the Vancouver Giants and the Kamloops Blazers.
It was a great game then ended with at 3-2 win for the Giants.
Brad proudly wore his Kamloops Blazer jersey that he got
when he went to their training camp in '88, '89 and '90.
Brad was also spotted on TV as he was one of many
responsible for "crowd control", as Don Cherry entered the building.

Don Cherry is decked out in a Yukon Tartan jacket.

One of the highlights of the night was when the mascots came out
onto the ice for a little scrum.  Say hello to "Peter Puck".
